I get so many questions about paint color, style, what to purchase and where, and where to start, oh and you don’t want to spend too much money. So many of you, have an idea, what you are looking for, but aren’t sure where to start to get there. You can waste a lot of money, if you don’t have a clear cut plan, and honestly if you roam around willy nilly, for too long, you might even change your mind before you’ve finished. Read my post about Figuring Out Your Style
Ok, I am by no means an expert, but I can share my personal experience and how I changed the look and feel of my space in about 6 to 9 months. Thats right, it takes time. Unless you have unlimited amounts of money, hire professionals, and have sourced things for a year, it will take some time to pull it all together. So don’t be discouraged, this is totally normal.
I have been at this decorating thing for too long to mention, and I have learned a few things, you might not believe, but trust me, they are true. You, will change your mind about your style, about every 2-5 years, just a bit. Sooner if you are a creative, a bit longer if you like to set it up and be done. I have had so many different styles over the years, it is crazy. I look back and I can not believe some of the things I once loved. All I am saying is, what you think you love right now, and believe is your style, and that is that, nope, you will change your mind. I am 100% sure of it. And because I know this to be true, I want to share a little tip with you. So simple, and you have heard it million times, but maybe never realized it included YOU, and or that it included your Home Decor, and not just your wardrobe. Are you ready for the secret sauce? Ok.
In a Living Room, start with Classic, clean lines, basics, in neutral colors, that will carry you through many years of changing your mind, about your style. This is where you spend the money. I am not talking about a lot of items. Splurge on a gorgeous well constructed sofa, 8-way hand tied, the whole nine yards, with a classic or clean line style. So a Chesterfield Sofa, or something sleek and modern, that could work in any space. If its a Dining Room or Kitchen, a big gorgeous table. From there decide what your budget allows, and what is important to you, for different people it might be different. You can spend a little bit of cash on a rug, if you prefer natural fibers like wool and silk. But you can save on a rug and even afford to change you mind, if you purchase synthetic. These days there are a ton of options and price points for carpets. A carpet can really be a focal point, or not, so choose carefully and consider that when choosing.
For me personally, because I know you will ask, I like investing in that Sofa, and then second to that would be lighting, and third mirrors. I adore lighting and mirrors, and I believe they are the magic. I could live with my space filled with just those things, for awhile, and slowly, carefully, and methodically, curate my space over time.
If all you had were freshly painted neutral walls, the most gorgeous sofa, lighting and mirror, imagine how many things you could find at the Antique store, to add in that lived in and collected over time look and feel Well, lets talk about that next time, because this is just where you start.
Thanks for Stopping By
