We have lived in this house for 23 years, and back when we purchased our home, the previous owners had just replaced or added this deck to the house. Let me go off on a side note here for a quick minute, the people that owned our home right before us, turned this six bedroom home, on three floors, into three apartments. One apartment on every floor, which meant a kitchen and full bathroom on every floor. So lots of work for us to convert this home back to its original glory. But all that to say that they had a love affair with, crazy glue, they crazy glued window panes, shelves to walls, curtain rods, you name it, they glued it. But when it came to this deck we hit the jackpot. Over many years of heavy use, the decking itself wore out and faded, and became very splintery, but the underneath structure of this deck was so rock solid that it became clear we could replace the decking and privacy walls without touching all the work underneath. I mean this deck is bolted into the block wall which is our Garage underneath, with bolts so large, I have never seen anything like them before in my life.
So here we are, last year we did it, we replaced the decking and walls and its a dream. We went with the composite decking and vinyl privacy walls-so no maintenance. And miraculously the huge “bird bees” which is what my girls always called these extra large, fluffy, wood bees that seemed to love our deck, disappeared. As soon as the first warm sunny day came, there they were. YUCK But now they are gone, no more wood to eat, so they are out of here.
I never did finish furnishing the space last year, and I wasn’t completely sure what I wanted here. I considered a sectional, and I do want one, but in another space, not here where there is full sun all day long, from dusk to dawn. I added the table, chairs and the umbrella last year, and I adore them. I spent a few days drinking coffee right there, but it wasn’t the comfy cozy seating I had in mind. Early this year, I went back and forth for a few months, adding and removing two separate items from my cart, in went a sectional, then out, and in went a sofa, then out. I wanted to make the right choice for the right space, I kept asking myself, how will I use this space? I wanted a retreat, a place to go to chill out, drink coffee, day dream, maybe spend time on my phone or laptop or maybe even take a nap. I couldn’t see myself laying on a couch with the bright sun directly above me, and then one day I remembered a chair I had seen at Target early in March. I noticed it back then but there was still snow on the ground, who buys outdoor furniture at that time of year? But suddenly I knew that was exactly the piece I had been looking for. I could snuggle up in there. Soooo, I clicked over to check it out on line. UGH the one I wanted was not available, I was so bummed, and I almost gave up right then and there. I thought I might as well order this dumb couch, but………. it was 1 am in the morning, which by the way is when I usually shop. But I was really tired this night, and I decided I was just too tired and frustrated to be shopping. So I closed my computer and went to bed. The next morning as soon as I opened my eyes, the chair was on my mind. I couldn’t wait to get down stairs and grab my coffee and get back to looking around. I clicked over to Target to take another look and there it was, but this time it was available to ship. I didn’t understand how just 7 hours later it was available, but right place, right time, add to cart and check out. BAM The chair was ordered. Within just a few days it was on my doorstep. I couldn’t wait for my husband to get home from work to help me get it on the deck and put it together, just a few bolts, nothing complicated. Everything about this chair is absolutely perfect, it is so large, two people can fit in it, or one taking a little catnap-ME. I plan to retreat here all Summer, if you can’t find me, I will be right there on that chair.

I tried this Vintage Lantern out here, and its so pretty. But I couldn’t dare risk forgetting it out here, and having it rained on, I love it too much, so I went for this extra large Citronella Candle from Flashpoint candles and. I love it.
I think everyone needs a place to retreat within their home. It could be your bedroom, a room out of sight from the rest, or porch or patio. but create a space where you can go and just be. I am planning a similar space within my home. I will get to it after I am finished with a few Summer projects. I hope to have it finished for Fall. Be sure to stop back and check it out.
Be sure to jump over and check out a few other Outdoor Spaces
